Our Head Office department is located in the heart of Piccadilly and occupies the 5th & 6th floor of our beautiful flagship store. This central London location, offers so much to explore including restaurants, bars, cultural sites, shopping and more, and only a short walk from the Green Park Tube Station and plenty of bus stops.

Role Purpose:

To create, develop, and improve digital systems and tools, by taking a lead role in overseeing the entire process from concept to digital implementation. They will configure and evaluate system architecture and use modelling and testing to assess and refine designs.

Key Accountabilities:


  • Actively participate in the evolution of our platform by researching and suggesting new technologies, staying at the forefront of industry trends.
  • Take full ownership of the most challenging areas of development within the Fortnum and Mason web platform.
  • Work with UX team to rapidly iterate prototypes and develop concept ideas into fully featured features (or fail fast).


  • Lead development activities assigned by the Head of Digital Engineering using appropriate tools such as Javascript (React), PHP, GraphQL and other web technologies
  • Maintain a progressive tech stack, including Adobe Commerce, Cloudflare, Newrelic and more
  • Champion DevOps and CI/CD methodologies to ensure agile collaboration and robust web solutions.
  • Write high-quality code that contributes to a scalable and maintainable web commerce platform.
  • Take full ownership of the most challenging areas of development within the Fortnum and Mason web platform.

People & Collaboration

  • Demonstrates that they can work independently and as part of a team.
  • Mentor, coach, and inspire direct reports or other junior team members of aspiring data engineers.
  • Fostering junior colleagues’ professional growth and development, via lunch and learns, job shadowing, technical updates in team meetings.
  • Lead engineering projects in collaboration with team members, ensuring the rapid development of high-quality, scalable and sustainable data solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with analysts, data scientists, and technology partners to understand their requirements and translate them into actionable data solutions.
  • Maintain open communication with the Data Engineering team and Head of Digital Engineering, working collaboratively and exchanging ideas to drive platform excellence.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experience in working in, and prioritising work across multiple projects and business functions.
  • Demonstrates evidence of delivering clear communication and training where required.
  • High level of technical competency
  • Ability to work as part of a team, but also as an individual contributor.
  • 10+ years’ experience working as a Web Developer (front end/back end)
  • 5+ years’ experience leading a team in either a technical or line manager function
  • Profound expertise in systems and software design
  • Hands-on experience with Magento (Adobe Commerce), ReactJS, GraphQL.
  • Possesses expert knowledge of the contemporary web engineering and web analytics landscape, including current tools, pertinent approaches and likely challenges.
  • Experience with architecture design and documentation
  • Experience with databases and data lakes
  • Experience with APIs (REST, etc)

  • Experience and ability to understand and analyse complex concepts and business processes to produce requirements definition for projects and translate these requirements to functional specifications, that are in simpler language that all stakeholders understand.
  • Maintains a proactive approach to staying updated with emerging technologies and a strong desire to continuously learn and adapt to new tools, languages and methodologies in the ever-evolving field of data engineering and analytics
  • A demonstrable ability to mentor and coach junior data engineers, sharing knowledge and expertise to help them grow in their roles.
  • The capability to collaborate efficiently with business stakeholders to understand their requirements and translate them into effective data solutions
  • Strong support for Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practices and an understanding of agile working methodologies.
  • Have deep knowledge on providing technical governance to enhance ways of working to improve the SDLC process.
  • Understanding of Retail environment and requirements for changing needs of the business

  • Familiar with the urgency/importance matrix, and impact/effort matrix, and be able to plot projects on both to help justify prioritization. Flexibility around deployment.
